Residents have since been allowed to return to their homes after the underground tankwas repaired.

"It was a large underground tank ... at the time of the incident it held 35,000, (and)several thousand litres have escaped," a fire brigade spokesman said.

Caltex engineers successfully repaired the leak with a replacement valve at about 9.30am(AEST), he said.

"Engineers have successfully replaced the broken valve and stopped the gas leak.

"The road was then reopened to traffic and the evacuated areas returned to normal."

The spokesman said they were called to the incident shortly after 7am (AEST).

"They found a large leak of gas," the spokesman said.

"A hose spray was erected to dissipate the gas cloud ... and a special replacementvalve was brought under police escort from Auburn."

He said weather conditions had been favourable with a breeze blowing continually throughthe incident.

A traffic management spokesman said traffic returned to normal along the road by about10.15am (AEST).
