BRAKING METHOD PROBED IN TRAIN CRASH.(Local)

The probe into what caused a July 15 train derailmentand collision appears to be focusing on a failed braking procedure, accordingto a State Police investigator.

Operators of the train, in attempting to close the gaps between its cars, may have applied the brakes in such a manner that it caused two cars to "bounce together too forcibly," said Investigator Robert Brenzel, who is monitoring Conrail's probe of the incident.

The narrowing of gaps betweem cars, called bunching, enables train crews to stop trains with greater speed and is practiced near intersections where stopping may be required, said Brenzel.
